Schools are encouraged to involve their whole school community during Fruit ‘n’ Veg week. Through curriculum, students can participate in learning activities that convey and reinforce positive nutrition messages. With this year’s theme being Cook a Surprise, Go for 2&5! we encourage schools to participate in the preparation and cooking of fruit and vegetables.
There are many ways that schools and classrooms can be involved in the promotion of fruit and vegetables during Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week 2008.
The school information booklet (PDF 1.1MB) contains lots of ideas for how whole school communities and individual classrooms can get involved. This booklet contains:
- Free fruit and vegetable (PDF 84KB) offer to schools to the value of $60. This is being offered to the first 200 schools to register before 29 August 2008.
- Resource pack order form (PDF 42KB) – one pack is available per school. This includes stickers, scratchie cards, pencils and other goodies to help promote Fruit ’n’ Veg Week. Complete your order form and fax it back to us before 22 August 2008.
- Curriculum matched science activities (PDF 750KB) and investigation worksheets for junior-middle (PDF 11KB) and middle-upper (PDF 22KB) primary students have been created around the theme of fruit and vegetables.
- Free cooking workshops are being offered to metropolitan primary schools by the trainee chefs from Swan TAFE.
- A number of competitions (PDF 44KB) are being offered this year. Kindy, PP and Yr 1 students can win a camera plus fresh fruit and vegetables for their classroom, by designing a Vegetable Man. Year 2-4 students can participate in designing a healthy sandwich and year 5-7 students are asked to design a lunch combo, which includes meal with a drink and fruit and/or vegetable snack.
- Design a Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week banner (PDF 259KB) and display it in your local fruit and veg store – entries close Friday 12 September 2008. Be one of the first 20 schools to register before 15 August to receive a free banner.
